ITI Capital Impacted by Regulatory Challenges
ITI Capital Limited, a stockbroking and investment management firm, was compelled to shut down its retail operations in 2022 due to restrictions imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This was in part linked to the acquisition and transfer of client assets and accounts from SVS Securities Limited to ITI Capital's trading platform. In 2019, the FCA had investigated SVS and uncovered irregularities related to its commission structures and the promotion of high-risk bonds and investments.
At the time of the acquisition, approximately £240 million from 18,000 investors was available for transfer to ITI Capital. According to Finance Magnates, "over 99 percent of SVS clients were transferred to ITI Capital."
The transfer process was notably lengthy, leaving many clients—particularly those who had moved from Defined Benefit (DB) pensions—unable to access their funds for extended periods. Clients also complained of poor communications from ITI Capital and difficulties in getting responses to their queries and technical issues with the trading platform.
The FCA imposed several restrictions on ITI Capital, including a ban on “collecting commissions for referring potential claims to SJS Legal”. Subsequently, further restrictions were enacted, preventing the firm from servicing any retail clients, both new and existing, leading to the closure of all individual retail client accounts by April 30, 2023. On 9 May 2024 the company issued a 'Solvency Statement' to reassure investors of the firm's financial standing.
